Ethiopian American Civic Advocacy’s open letter to Mr Obama
Tuesday, May 25, 2010
The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States of America
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500
Re: Ethiopia’s Sham Election
Dear Mr. President:
Ethiopian American Civic Advocacy is writing this letter to convey to you our concerns about Ethiopia’s recent fraudulent election and to ask you to speak publicly to the flaws in this election, and to send a strong message to the Ethiopian rulers that you do not recognize the election results as legitimate or valid.
The situation in Ethiopia is becoming more and more perilous every day. We strongly believe that unless the US makes urgent changes in Washington’s foreign policy towards the dictatorial rule in Ethiopia, the further destabilization of Ethiopia and therefore the Horn of Africa will be very much and rapidly imminent, as people come to believe that transformation toward democracy is not possible through nonviolent means.
Recognizing your commitment to protect US interests, mitigate the crisis in the Horn of Africa and prevent the destabilization of the region we urge you:
- To join the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch in denouncing Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s systematic violations of human rights and of democratic principles;
- To take immediate and tangible steps to ensure that the Ethiopian government fully abides with human rights and democratic principles;
- To send a message of solidarity to the people of Ethiopia who have been denied their liberty.
Sincerely,
Mekdese B Kassa, (Pharm.D.)
Chair,
